Education has been shifted to the clutching corners of profit motive business ideology and children from marginalised communities have no access to quality and inclusive education in  government schools. The education intervention known as Udaan started after Gujarat riots as children where the worst affected. Due to fear and alienation children stopped going main stream schools. Janvikas initiated various interventions such as starting of learning centers and schools in / and near some of the conflict affected areas.

To facilitate access to quality and inclusive primary education for the children of marginalized communities.

Methodology

Adopting pedagogy of learning that is joyful and nurtures secular, democratic values that emphasis principle of equality and non-discrimination.

Janvikas  traversed  through different phases of setting up model school to running community based support classes to using technology – Videoshala, computer literacy to setting up libraries in formal schools to collaborating with schools in improving education for children, promoting culture of education in most oppressed communities through schools and community engagements.

With the enactment of RTE Act, the education intervention took a strategic shift to operationalize this Act in 268 schools of 4 districts in Gujarat for strengthening diversity perspectives in these schools. Over years Janvikas has up scaled its intervention and monitors RTE compliance in 800 schools of 7 districts in Gujarat. The initiative took up the task to facilitate improvement in learning levels of children by promoting education support classes and also developing / disseminating improvised Teaching and Learning materials for the children in selected 160 schools.

Some positive highlights:

  • 802 Edu leaders and 1460 SMC members capacitated.
  • 204 class rooms in 52 (20%)schools constructed, new toilets for girls have been constructed in 62 (88.5%) schools, whereas potable drinking water facility in 73 (97.3%) schools have been installed.
  • 60 Education Support Centers in 60 villages reaches out to 3500 children for enhancing learning levels.
  • Nullified discriminatory practices with Dalit and Muslims children like separate sittings in 45 schools, toilet cleaning in 111 schools, bringing plates from home or coding of plates in 65 schools.
