To give hope for a better future

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” — Nelson Mandela

Meghdhanushtranslates to “Rainbow” in English – This unique school as the name suggests – aims at imbibing the colours of unity, diversity, equality, inclusiveness to educate these young minds to change the world for a ‘just’ inclusive society. This school has emerged as a model school on many fronts. The joyous education that Meghdhanush imparts to the young minds is worth watching and one comes away wondering why more such schools cannot be within the reach of the marginalized minorities and discriminated.

Located within the precincts of an IDP colony (258 households) in Kalol block of Panchmahal district, the establishment of Meghdhanush Primary School in 2006 was timely and touched a healingchord among the communal violence-ravaged Muslim community. At the first instance, this model school with 136 students mostly from the IDP colony; a few (10 )that come from outside and even non-Muslims, is RTE compliant in its pupil – teacher ratio (9 teachers and 6 class rooms), toilet facilities, provision of mid-day meals and above all the functioning of an active SMC along with nominal fee. Appreciative of the functioning of this school, the civic authorities have brought further improvements to the school: upgrading one of the school rooms for government-run mid-day meal programme; locating government anganwadi programme (pre-school) in the school premises; paving the area outsidethe classrooms and donating a Reverse Osmosis plant for clean drinking water.

While adopting the mainstream syllabus, Meghdhanush School has integrated a pedagogy which allows children to explore, learn and imbibe values of democracy, diversity and equality. This is done through group-work; theatre; celebrations of all religious festivals; inclusion of the names of all religious gods in their lessons; exposure visits to temples, mosques, heritage sites; food festivals that organise diverse food etc.

Meghdhanush has a Bal-Panchayat (Children Council) that encourages their children to be creative in school activities such as decorating their classrooms and save from the pocket money they get from their parents. The thirteen member SMC has been playing a proactive role in engaging with parent members to participate in meetings; counselling the parents to collaborate with teachers and not confront. Standing strong on its foundation for joyful learning, this school has laid foundation for future in lives of these young tots This has been stepping stone for a girl child to secure admission in government medical college and a boy in engineering college.

The Meghdhanush School is monitored by edu-leaders from “Udaan team” and earned the credit to impart quality educational with joyful learning. This school is slowly and steadily traversing its path for self sustainability. The school is supported partially by Janvikas and rest from the nominal fees. It has approached various corporate for support so that this school can bring hope and sun shine in the lives of many children.
